Background of the Study:
In recent years, social media platforms have become powerful tools for human rights advocacy, providing individuals and groups with the ability to mobilize, raise awareness, and challenge violations of human rights in real time. Sokoto South, located in the northwest of Nigeria, has seen a surge in the use of social media for political and social activism, including human rights causes. Activists in Sokoto South have leveraged platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to advocate for women's rights, freedom of expression, and other pressing human rights issues (Mustapha & Adebayo, 2024).

The impact of social media on human rights advocacy in Sokoto South is multifaceted. On one hand, social media has enabled faster dissemination of information and has allowed marginalized groups to voice their concerns on a global scale. On the other hand, social media advocacy has also led to heightened scrutiny and, at times, retaliation from authorities and other societal actors (Mohammed & Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to examine the role of social media in promoting human rights in Sokoto South, the challenges it presents, and its effectiveness in fostering social and political change.

Statement of the Problem:
Although social media has provided a platform for human rights advocacy in Sokoto South, the effectiveness of this tool is limited by several factors, including government censorship, misinformation, and lack of digital literacy among some sections of the population. Additionally, the digital divide in Sokoto South has meant that not everyone has equal access to social media, which hinders its potential as a tool for widespread advocacy. The problem also lies in the fact that while social media has led to greater awareness of human rights issues, it has not always resulted in tangible changes in policy or behavior from authorities.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the role of social media in human rights advocacy in Sokoto South.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of social media in raising awareness and influencing policy change in Sokoto South.

  3. To identify the challenges and limitations of using social media for human rights advocacy in Sokoto South.

Research Questions:

  1. How does social media influence human rights advocacy in Sokoto South?

  2. To what extent has social media been effective in raising awareness and influencing policy change regarding human rights in Sokoto South?

  3. What challenges do human rights advocates in Sokoto South face when using social media for advocacy?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media has a significant impact on human rights advocacy in Sokoto South.

  2. Social media has been effective in raising awareness and influencing human rights policies in Sokoto South.

  3. Challenges such as government censorship and misinformation hinder the effectiveness of social media in human rights advocacy in Sokoto South.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study will focus on the role of social media in human rights advocacy within Sokoto South, exploring both the positive and negative aspects. Data will be collected from human rights activists, social media users, and policy experts through surveys and interviews. Limitations include potential bias from social media users and challenges in quantifying the direct impact of social media advocacy on policy change.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Social Media: Online platforms that enable users to create, share, and exchange content, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

  • Human Rights Advocacy: Efforts to promote and protect human rights through public awareness, legal reforms, and political actions.

  • Digital Divide: The gap between individuals who have access to digital technologies, such as the internet and social media, and those who do not.
